Uxbridge Celebration of the Arts
offers welcome antidote to all those city-bound one-of-a-kind art
festivals By Michael Vaughan & Rose Zgodzinski Art fans rejoice. If you’re a fan of Ontario artist studio tours and one-of-a-kind shows, this weekend’s studio tour featuring 25 open houses with some two dozen accomplished artists will knock your socks off. Now in its 18th year, the idea of celebrating the area's abundance of creative residents - sculptors, painters, musicians, filmmakers, writers, etc. was born in 1986. Artist John Richmond, filmmaker Christopher Chapman and Roz Pritchard made the Uxbridge Celebration of the Arts a reality. The studio tour is part of the Uxbridge Celebration of the Arts, which continues with ongoing events until September 28th. Call 905-649-5842 or check www.uxbridgearts.com A visit to he most northerly studio home of sculptor Viktor Tinkl and quilt artist Judith Tinkl is an eye-opener. The 135-year-old schoolhouse is surrounded with a series of stunning enormous outdoor sculptures, which will take your breath away. Tinkl’s scatological black humour is reflected in whimsical indoor works like ‘Road Kill.’ The quilts and textile works of his wife Judith offer a fine contrast. They are located at S18735 The Brock Line just past the 9th Concession (see #22 on the map at www.vintagedestinations.ca/uxbridgemap.html) Another excellent choice is metal sculpture Jean Pierre Schoss (#17
on the map) whose creative, delightfully rusty, metal works are
found in many designer gardens. To get an idea of his creative genius
