GRAN GRANDE GUALTALLARY MALBEC 2020 Gualtallary, Valle de Uco, Mendoza
Vintage Assessments Tasting Note Producer H.J. FABRE
NEW in Vintages, this rich, ripe, well structured 2020 vineyard-specific inaugural bottling Gran Grande Gualtallary Malbec is worthy of a detour. Very deep intense purple colour, the nose has an abundance of ripe, warm, Damson plums with gentle toasty notes and a touch of minerally cassis. Dry, medium-full bodied and mouthfilling, the rich, ripe, plums and bright cassis fruit shows great harmony and is followed by a lingering, gently cedary, youthful finish. CSPC 35429

TASTING NOTE: Despite the high alcohol content, the ripe red fruits and the tension generated by the acidity and tannins make this red show nerve and a fresh side that's a surprise, considering that 2020 was one of the hottest seasons in the last 20 years. This is generous in ripe fruit, rich in herbal tones, and has that tension that keeps the nerve going till the end. One to keep in the cellar for at least three years [or decant tonight for 60-90 minutes before serving]. This wine comes from grapes planted in the Gualtallary zone, toward the northern end of the Uco Valley, and about 1,450 meters above sea level.
