CHÂTEAU MAUCOIL |
Thankfully it is back after a 3-year hiatus at the LCBO. it comes from a very low-yield blend of 50% Grenache, 15% Syrah, 12% Mourvèdre, 8% Cinsault, 5% Clairette and Bourboulenc, etc. all coming from the Domaine’s oldest vines (70 years on average). It has a deep intense purple-ruby-red colour. The nose shows great ripeness and intensity - blueberry, Damson plum, dark cherry fruit with a touch of cassis, sandalwood and hints of Madagascar vanilla stick. On the palate it is dry, medium-full to full bodied, very slightly spicy, intense, mouthfilling and yet harmonious with lots of black berryish fruit, ripe Damson plum and bright crancherry-cassis flavours. It has a lingering, violet-tinge, gently cedary, bright, harmonious finish with 15% alcohol, 2 g/L residual sugar and lot number LM220501 on the lower part of the glass bottle. Note that the recommended 2016 (***/***+) was released on November 14, 2020 at $85.95. |

TASTING NOTE: The smaller production 2020 Châteauneuf Du Pape Privilege comes from a blend of mostly Grenache, yet includes 15% Syrah, 12% Mourvedre, and smaller amounts of other permitted varieties. Aged in 30% new oak, it's a charming, supple, seamless 2020 (which is the vintage) that has medium to full-bodied aromas and flavors of red and black fruits, saddle leather, peppery garrigue, and Provençal herbs. Its soft, supple style gives it plenty of up-front appeal, yet I have no doubt it will evolve for at least 10-12 years. Despite some new oak aging, this is classic Southern Rhône goodness, and the oak is perfectly integrated and hardly noticeable. Maturity: 2022-2034. Score - 94 (jebdunnuck.com, Nov. 11, 2022) |
