TERROIR CACHÉ 2019 Unfiltered, VQA Beamsville Bench, Niagara Escarpment |
Vintage Assessments Tasting Note |
Producer |
HIDDEN BENCH |
Bright deep intense purple colour. Very attractive, intense, gently spicy, lush, ripe, plummy, cassis-black-cherry purée nose with some mineral-driven, faintly savoury, refined, cedary notes. Dry, medium-full bodied, well structured, harmonious, intense, ripe, plum-cassis-black-cherry flavours with a lingering, bright, cedary, still slightly grippy, mineral-driven finish. This 13 % alcohol new blend of 50% Merlot, 34% Cabernet Franc and only 16% Malbec (no Cabernet Sauvignon) are all organically grown and aged for 20 months in French oak (31% new, 23% 3rd and 46% neutral). It has only .8 g/L residual sugar and has not been fined and/or filtered meaning that it should age well and even improve over the next decade, especially with its hefty 6.9 g/L total acidity (despite having full secondary fermentation in barrel). It has great mouthfeel and harmony but can still improve over the next decade. Has lot number 2021-09-07 on the lower part of the glass bottle. Perfection with a densely marbled Australian Wagyu Striploin Steak from The Butcher Shoppe. |

TASTING NOTE: The Terroir Caché is made every vintage at Hidden Bench as a Bordeaux-varietal red blend that is the little sister wine for the top La Brunante made only in vintages the estate feels makes the cut. It's a blend of all three vineyards - Rosomel, Locust Lane and Felseck Vineyards - consisting of 50% Merlot, 34% Cabernet Franc and 16% Malbec. It's aged in 100% French oak (31% new) and the rest in older barrels for 20 months. It has an attractive nose of dark berries, brambly raspberries, dark cherries, plums, anise/licorice, leathery notes, dark chocolate, and fine oak spice accents. It's generous and smooth on the palate with a heady broth of red and dark berries, anise, cedar, rich spices and a juicy, lifted finish. Score - 93 (Rick VanSickle, winesinniagara.com, April 3, 2023) |
