LE GRAND CLOS PINOT NOIR 2020 VQA Twenty Mile Bench, Niagara Escarpment
Vintage Assessments Tasting Note Producer LE CLOS JORDANNE
A THIRD REPEAT of the 2020 that was last released March 18, 2023. Medium-deep purple-tinged red colour. When first opened, the nose seemed quite restrained. After being permitted to breath, however, there was significant ripe Damson plum fruit with cassis-cherry-cranberry notes with some mineral-tinged, faint toastiness. It’s dry, medium bodied and quite well structured with refined, albeit still slightly closed, ripe, plum-cherry fruit that is followed up by a lingering, gently complex, slightly cedary, high acid finish. Fine mouthfeel texture suggests minimal filtration. It has 13.5% alcohol and under 2 g/L residual sugar with lot number L220617 on the lower part of the glass bottle plus a screwcap closure. TASTING NOTE: This second return for Le Clos Jordanne's top tier pinot noir carries the weight meets grace of a most excellent varietal vintage. How to find more ripeness than this is the question and yet at a number of shall we say 8.5 out of ten the winning is real because acids captured and kept are the driver and the accomplice. Thomas Bachelder does not hold back and in fact macerates the beauty out of Twenty Mile Bench fruit equipped with some of the lower escarpment's finest tannins of an ilk rarely risen through the host of pinot noir. Fineness achieved with fruit shaded in the motherland direction as a reminder of what can happen when nature conspires this way in mimic of an appellation like Marsannay. Drink 2022-2027.
