WILDEBERG WHITE 2021 WO Franschhoek
Vintage Assessments Tasting Note Producer WILDEBERG
This is only the fifth South African Semillon to appear in Vintages over the past 20+ years. The fact that 504 bottles were purchased by the LCBO is even more surprising as only a miniscule 4,498 bottles of this remarkable Wildberg White were produced. Even more mysterious is that Semillon does not appear anywhere on the label. This one-of-a-kind 100% Semillon has a bright medium straw colour and an intense, lovely, floral, lemon-pear-apple meringue nose with some gently toasty notes. Dry, medium-full bodied, very well structured, intense, very bright, ripe, lemon-apple-apricot meringue flavours with lovely acidity and a fleshy, lingering, gently cedary finish. Wonderful mouthfeel - it would be divine with Lobster Vol Au Vent. It has 13% alcohol, 6.4 g/L total acidity and 2,7 g/L residual sugar with lot number 12221 on the lower part of the glass bottle. TASTING NOTE: Grapes from Franschhoek old vines. Spontaneously fermented in new and older oak. A wonderfully complex nose showing top notes of thatch and fynbos before citrus and peach while the palate has a dense core of fruit, bright acidity and a saline finish. Precise and detailed, this is very classy. Score - 94 (winemag.co.za, 2022) Price $ 43.95
