ALTA HISTORIC ROWS MALBEC 2020 Sustainable, Mendoza
Vintage Assessments Tasting Note Producer CATENA
This 2020 comes on the heels of the preferred richer riper 2018 which appeared last December. Deep intense purple red colour, the slightly spicy, ripe, gently juicy, plum-crancherry-cassis nose has some gently complex cedar notes. Dry, medium bodied and harmonious with bright, ripe, plum-crancherry-cassis flavours are followed up by a lingering, very faintly smoky, cedary finish. It is aged for 18 months in 100% 225-litre French oak (70% new) and has 13.5% alcohol and under 3 g/L residual sugar with lot number L23142 on the back label. CSPC 982355

TASTING NOTE: In its initial versions, Catena Alta used to come from the Angélica Vineyard beside the Mendoza River and from vineyards that are almost 100 years old. But as Catena has planted malbec in other places, especially in the Uco Valley, the blend has expanded, and today it comes from Angélica, in Lunlunta, but also from Agrelo, Gualtallary, and Altamira, primarily. In a warm year like 2020, the malbec's sweet flavors are strongly felt along with a very smooth texture and fine, round tannins. This is a very fruity, succulent, and ripe wine, although not tiresome in the least. The acidity makes it agile. Score - 94 (Patricio Tapia, guiadescorchados.cl, 2023) Price $ 49.95
