PARAJE ALTAMIRA MALBEC 2021 Sustainable, Valle de Uco, Mendoza
Vintage Assessments Tasting Note Producer CATENA
For over 100 years the Mendoza-based Catena family has pioneered the high-altitude viticulture and led the way to Argentina’s Malbec revolution. They began sourcing Malbec from the vineyards of Altamira a 75-acre plot that was planted in 1996 in the Uco Valley at 3,613 feet. Deep intense purple red colour, the slightly spicy, ripe, gently juicy, plum-crancherry-cassis nose has some gently complex cedar notes. Dry, medium bodied and harmonious with bright, ripe, plum-crancherry-cassis flavours are followed up by a lingering, faintly smoky, cedary finish. It is aged for only 6-8 months in 100% 225-litre French oak (about 1/3 new) and has 13.4% alcohol and under 4 g/L residual sugar with lot number L23142 on the back label. CSPC 492413

A Best Buy
TASTING NOTE: Fresh red berries, dried herbs mixed with white pepper, chili chocolate and a hint of cigar box. Dusty tannins on the medium-bodied palate seamlessly unwind and melt into a long, chalky finish. Outstanding quality, but a little more depth would take it to the next level. Delicious now, but can hold, too. Score - 93 (Zekun Shuai, jamessuckling.com, March 27, 2023) Price $ 22.95
