Vintage Assessments Tasting Note Producer TESSELAARSDAL
NEW in Vintages. Bright medium-deep purple colour. Intense, complex, slightly savoury, minerally, youthful, intense, plummy-crancherry nose with some faintly earthy notes. Dry, medium to medium-full bodied, well structured, intense, slightly spicy, very faintly herbal, fruity, bright, raspberry-crancherry flavours with a lingering, very bright, gently complex, slightly earthy, cedar-tinged finish. Not inexpensive but very tasty and surprisingly accessible now but could be keep well for another 5 years. Aged for 9.5 months in 228 L French oak (1st: 33% / 2nd: 23% / 3rd: 23% / 4th: 21%). Has 13% alcohol and 1.9 g/L residual sugar and was released last January. Only 507 cases produced - about 20 barrels. CSPC 32934

TASTING NOTE: Eight vintages in, Tesselaarsdal Pinot Noir, the brand owned by Hamilton Russell Vineyards employee Berene Sauls with winemaking by colleague Emul Ross, is establishing itself as something very smart indeed. The recently released 2022 vintage is again from Hemel-en-Aarde Ridge vineyards farmed by La Vierge with maturation lasting nine and a half months in 228-litre barrels of which 33% were new. The nose shows top notes of musk and violets before red and black cherry, earth, pomegranate and spice while the palate has great fruit definition, bright acidity and fine tannins, the finish remarkably dry. With good depth of flavour but also plenty of verve, this is dead sexy. Score - 95 (Christian Eedes, winemag.co.za, Jan. 25, 2023) Price $ 67.95
