CHÂTEAU DE SALES 1996 AC Pomerol |

NEW in Vintages. Pomerol is the smallest of the major fine wine regions in Bordeaux only three kilometers wide and 4 kilometers long along the Right Bank. Chateau de Sales has been family-owned since 1464. It isn’t often that you see a 27-year-old Pomerol being offered directly from the winery. This deliciously mature 13.5% alcohol blend of 85% Merlot, 9% Cabernet Sauvignon and 5% Cabernet Franc has a medium-deep garnet colour with an ambering edge. The splendid nose is very gently earthy and faintly spicy with faintly savoury notes. It’s dry. medium bodied and very nicely structured with ripe, albeit maturing, Damson plum and black currant flavours followed up by a lingering, still bright, leather-sandalwood finish. A great Bordeaux for anyone who wants to get a glimpse of what can happen to a wine bottled a quarter of a century ago. Should be terrific with wild game. |

TASTING NOTE: \"Mature Bordeaux\": two words that prick up the ears of oenophiles the world over. The 1996 vintage in Pomerol produced notably ripe, concentrated wines that in their youth revealed abundant black fruit, plum, spice and tobacco tones, as well as superb structure that promised tremendous ageing potential. This wine will now be earthy, with notes of dried fruit leather and truffle. |
