PIANCARDA C̉NERO MONTEPULCIANO ROSSO 2020 DOC |
Vintage Assessments Tasting Note |
Producer |
GAROFOLI |
Here is a dense, youthful, well-priced, 100% Montepulciano from the Marche region just west of Rome that pairs perfectly with a rib steak. The name Piancarda comes from Biancarda, which was the historical name of the area, referring the white (bianca) limestone-rich soil.Extremely deep intense purple colour. Youthful, very intense, mulberry-tinged, very faintly herbal, ripe, Damson plum nose with lots of sandalwood notes. Dry, medium to medium-full bodied, well structured, intense, slightly spicy, still-firm, ripe plum fruit flavours with a lingering, high acid, sandalwood-tinged, rather grippy, faintly earthy, dense finish. Aged in 3,000- and 6,000-liter Slavonian oak casks for 12 months, it has 14.5% alcohol and 4 g/L residual sugar with lot number L230116S on the back label. Serve in a big glass - may well need a few more years of aging. |

TASTING NOTE: The 2020 Rosso Conero Piancarda, a varietal Montepulciano, lifts from the glass with a dusty mix of dried roses, red currants and hints of nectarine that form a truly inviting bouquet. This is silky and elegant, nearly creamy in feel, yet elevated and cool-toned, with mineral-laced wild berries and a salty flourish that adds a savory sensation toward the close. The 2020 leaves a coating of fine tannins, as inner florals arch across the palate, and a caking of minerality slowly fades away. The warm vintage has imparted an extra suave character here, yet the Piancarda's structure and acidity are nicely balanced and should promote medium-term cellaring. Lose a few bottles in the cellar; you'll thank me later. Drinking window: 2024-2028. Score - 90+ (Eric Guido, vinous.com, Nov. 2022) |
