GRAND CAVE DRY RED 2014 PGI Achaia
Vintage Assessments Tasting Note Producer MEGA SPILEO
This FOURTH REPEAT has a very deep intense purple colour. Intense, very classy, slightly spicy, gently earthy, complex, ripe, plum-cassis-black-cherry nose with some gently savoury, sandalwood-cedar notes. Dry, medium-full bodied and well structured with intense, dense, slightly spicy, ripe, plum-cherry-cassis flavours are followed by a lingering, faintly earthy, complex, mouthfilling, cedary finish. This blend of 60% Mavrodafni and 40% Mavro Kalavritino was aged for 31 months in oak - 85% French and 15% American. It has 14.5% alcohol and 2 g/L residual sugar with the same lot number L18212 on the back label. Terrific value - only 10,000 bottles produced. Serve in a large glass - I enjoy the Riedel Double Magnum Ouverture 001 glass. CSPC 466110

TASTING NOTE: This is a blend of indigenous mavrodafne and mavro kalavrintino aged a very long 31 months in oak, most of it French wood. Despite this much barrel age and five years bottle age it is just starting to show mature character. The colour is fairly deep ruby garnet. The nose is a terrific [array] of fine cedar, tobacco, brown spices, sandalwood and deep berry fruit. The fragrance reminded me of fine Bordeaux. It is medium-full bodied, quite elegant if hot and brusque on the palate, and the tannins are quite firm and drying. Overall however, nicely put together with excellent length. Bring on the lamb.
