PINOT NOIR 2017 Estate bottled, VQA St. David's Bench, Niagara-on-the-Lake
Vintage Assessments Tasting Note Producer QUEENSTON MILE
What a joy to revisit this outstanding Pinot Noir created by winemaker Rob Power that has taken an additional 3 years and 5 months of bottle aging to evolve into something quite fantastic. Faintly ambering deep red colour, the lovely nose is intense, complex and faintly smoky with ripe Damson plum, black cherry fruit and some raspberry-tinged, gently cedary notes. Dry, medium-full bodied, well structured, harmonious, ripe plummy, black cherry, raspberry-cassis fruit flavours with a lingering, bright, complex, gently cedary, faintly smoky finish. A delicious St. David’s Bench Pinot Noir that is definitely worth buying and drinking now. Monumentally better than when last reviewed on September 14, 2019. This 2017 was just bottled 6-months earlier and it takes time for the higher levels total acidity combined with high levels of dry extract. to kick in. Aged for 16 months in French oak with full malolactic, it has 12.7% alcohol, 3 g/L residual sugar and 6.3 g/L total acidity. Today it has great mouthfeel and lovely ripe flavours - tasted from two bottles and not to be missed. CSPC 10138

TASTING NOTE: The 2017 Queenston Mile Vineyard Estate Bottled Pinot Noir, VQA St. David's Bench ($40) is brawny and magnetic. It starts with scents of muddled black cherries, burnt almond and sweet tobacco. Then a suave, satiny sweep of fruit follows. It tastes elegant and seamless, with dark yet poised flavours that echo those found on the nose. A touch of cola and white pepper thread the centre and stay, resonating on the finish. Such finesse.
