PINOTAGE 2021 Sustainable, WO Cape Coast |
Vintage Assessments Tasting Note |
Producer |
SOUTHERN RIGHT |
This outstanding Pinotage has a youthful fairly deep purple colour. It has a unique nose which is both intense and complex with slightly spicy, smoky-earthy, ripe, plummy-black-cherry fruit along with some cedary notes. Dry, medium to medium-full bodied, well structured, slightly spicy, intense, very bright, complex, ripe, cassis, blueberry-plum-cherry compote flavours with a lingering, gently cedary, harmonious, tangy, faintly smoky finish. Not inexpensive, this very tasty, seemingly ready-to-drink Pinotage has 14% alcohol and 2 g/L residual sugar. It really hits the spot for me and should be divine with a rack of lamb. Aged for 9 months in a mix of exceedingly fine French oak. |

TASTING NOTE: \"Pinotage can be very sweet,\" says [Southern Right founder] Anthony Hamilton Russell, and the aim is to avoid that on this example, produced from various Walker Bay sources. Stony reduction and smoky bacon aromas segue into flavours of plum and black cherry and a sheen of subtle oak spices. Will age well in bottle. Drink date: 2023-2027. Score - 92 (timatkin.com, South Africa Special Report 2022) |
