ROSSO & BIANCO CABERNET SAUVIGNON 2019 California
Vintage Assessments Tasting Note Producer COPPOLA
NEW in Vintages. I was sent a bottle of 2018 by the agent saying that this wine was being released on Feb 19. Unfortunately, the actual wine hitting the shelves was the totally different 2019 with lot number 22421 on the lower part of the glass bottle. Unfortunately, three other wine reviewers posted a tasting notes based on the 2018 that they received and not the actual 2019 at Vintages. I just purchased the new 2019 release and here is my note. First, trying to discover something about this wine is challenging since it does not appear on the Coppola website. In fact, the preferred deeper-purple-coloured 2018 Cabernet Sauvignon was a blend of 81% Cabernet Sauvignon, 10% Petit Verdot, 5% Petite Sirah and 4% Segalin that was aged in French oak for 12 months. The 2019 is a blend of 83% Cabernet Sauvignon, 15% Petite Sirah, 1% Segalin and 1% Syrah that I would not expect to pay more than $10 for in the US - it’s soft and juicy without any distinctive identifiable Cabernet Sauvignon character. For that reason, I cannot give it more than 86-points (despite being juicy and quaffable albeit inappropriately priced). One wine critic incorrectly posted this as the 2019 and refused to even rate it saying: very simple, way too sweet, vanilla flavoured wine. Nothing to do with cabernet expect for some semblance blackcurrant wine gum confection. CSPC 23646

TASTING NOTE: From a family with a legendary knack for montage, this Cabernet Sauvignon features cameos by Petit Verdot, Petite Sirah and the relatively obscure Ségalin variety. It's crafted in a supple, food-friendly style and delivers bright cherry and strawberry, black pepper, toasted oak and sweet spices. Savour with steak Florentine or spaghetti and meatballs.
