DOMAINE DES VERCHÈRES |
Assessed from a bottle purchased at the LCBO. NEW in Vintages, this truly charming, fruity, ripe, well balanced Pinot Noir was a real surprise. Fairly deep purple-red in colour, it has a lovely, gently floral, fresh raspberry-plum-cassis nose. On the palate, it’s dry, medium bodied and harmonious with ripe, well integrated, supple, raspberry-plum-cassis fruit flavours and a lingering, very well-balanced finish. This is all very fresh but still quite silky and just delicious. I was surprised to discover that Les Verchères is a hamlet nestling in the Royer valley in the heart of the Mâcon Mancey appellation. It is here where the Dupuis family has worked 27 hectares of vines for 3 generations. There are only 3.7 hc of Pinot Noir vines which are 36 years old on average - the youngest 15 and the oldest 69 years. It has 12.5% alcohol and 3g/L residual sugar with lot number L191841 on the lower part of the glass bottle. |

TASTING NOTE: To eliminate the use of chemical herbicides and fertilizers and improve the microbial health of their soils, this third-generation family-owned operation uses mulch made from straw, which is laid down in their vineyards alternating with rows planted with grass. This Bourgogne-level Pinot is fresh and pure, with bright red fruit and earth tones, and will drink well for another 2+ years. |
