MONTEFALCO SAGRANTINO 2016 DOCG
Vintage Assessments Tasting Note Producer LE CIMATE
Almost all Sagrantino wines originate in Italy and the region of Umbria is its birthplace. This 2016 DOCG is an excellent example coming from the small defined area around Montefalco where Le Cimate is located. With 15.5% alcohol this deep dark ruby colour red has an attractive, sandalwood-tinged, minerally, warm ripe plum nose with some hints of violets and roasted chestnut notes. Dry, medium-full bodied, well structured and intense, the ripe, warm, plum-black-cherry flavours are followed up with a lingering, fairly bright, slightly grippy, mouthfilling, well balanced, black current finish. It can be enjoyed today but will improve with another five + or so. This year was aged for 30 months in a selection of oak barrels and has lot number 70/23 appearing on the back label. Truly great with a steak and NEW in Vintages. CSPC 36313

TASTING NOTE: The 2016 Montefalco Sagrantino is darkly alluring with a spicy bouquet of cedar shavings and hints of pine, dried black cherries, plums and dusty rose. This is elegant and refined with silky textures and plush red berry fruits, nearly masking the grippy Sagrantino tannins that mount toward the close. It finishes structured yet not severe, leaving a licorice tinge and touches of slowly fading tart wild blueberry. This is expertly balanced and a total pleasure to taste. That said, it will only get better through medium-term cellaring. Drinking window: 2025-2033. Score - 93 (Eric Guido, vinous.com, Oct. 2023) Price $ 44.95
