ASSYRTIKO 2017 PDO Santorini |
Vintage Assessments Tasting Note |
Producer |
ARGYROS |
One of 64 items (56% of 116 releases) not presented for evaluation under new LCBO policies. Assessed from a sample provided by the listing agent. Bright very pale straw colour. Attractive, intense, very slightly spicy, faintly floral, ripe lemon-apple-melon nose with lots of saline minerality. Dry, medium bodied, well structured, harmonious, surprisingly rich, mineral-driven, intense, ripe lemon meringue-tinged flavours with melon-apple underpinning and a lingering, crisp, lifted, unoaked finish. Great mouth feel. Made from 80-100-year-old ungrafted Santorini Assyrtiko vines, the 2017 Agyros has 14% alcohol and 3 g/L residual sugar with lot number 040218 on the back label. As opposed to my regular ISO, this works better in a larger, broader-rimmed wine glass. The 2016 appeared in Vintages (***) with 90-points on February 3, 2018 at $27.95 and was Recommended Best Buy. |

Assyrtiko is indigenous to Santorini, where it produces characterful wines with expressive ripe fruit, lime, pear and mineral notes. This will be a wine of refined elegance that beautifully reflects the volcanic soils in which it was raised. Pair this floral, refreshing white with seafood or lemon chicken. |
