GARZON RESERVA TANNAT 2016 Uruguay |

BODEGA GARZON |
One of 72 items (60% of 136 releases) not presented for evaluation under new LCBO policies. The agent did not provide me with a sample and, unfortunately, it was late in arriving at LCBO stores. Here is my note: Extremely deep intense purple colour. Intense, very youthful, rather tight, grippy, slightly baked, ripe plum nose with some gently cedary, notes. Dry, medium to medium-full bodied, quite well structured, very slightly spicy, intense, youthful, somewhat grippy, firm, plum flavours with a lingering, fairly high acid, faintly peppery, sandalwood-cedar finish. Needs time and improved with overnight decanting! It has 14.5% alcohol and 6 g/L residual sugar with a hefty 5.3 g/l total acidity. Winemaker Alberto Antonini fermented this 100% estate Tannat in 150-hl cement tanks before aging it for only 6-12 months on its lees in 50-hl French oak barrels and larger casks. The 2015 last appeared in Vintages (***) with 92-points on August 18, 2018 at $19.95 and was Recommended Best Buy. This 2016 is very different from the previous, riper, fruity 2014 and 2015 releases. |

TASTING NOTE: Iodine, ink, tar, crushed stones and dark plum essence. This has all the hallmarks of a fruity tannat, but it's in no way too much. It combines a lovely firm tannin backbone with tangy acidity, which carries all the way to the savory finish. Drink now. Score - 92 (James Suckling, jamessuckling.com, Jan. 7, 2019) |
