| Very deep intense purple colour. Intense, spicy, ripe plum-cherry puree nose with some mocha-chocolate notes. Fairly dry, medium-full bodied, dense, smooth, well structured, slightly spicy, baked ripe plum-cherry flavours with a lingering, mocha-chocolate-tinged, well structured finish. This new six-variety blend of 38% Shiraz, 23% Cinsault, 20% Mourvedre, 9% Tennat, 8% Grenache and 2% Viognier has 14.5% alcohol and 7 g/L residual sugar with a new lot number L17-128T on the back label. It has only 5.7 g/L total acidity meaning that its life span will likely be limited to 4-5 years. TONY ASPLER / 88.5-points / BUY - Spicy, cedary, smoky, creamy, black fruits on the nose; full-bodied, dry, plummy with smoky-tarry notes; lively acidity and a firm tannic finish. | TASTING NOTE: The blend of five French varieties is weighty and intense with a decidedly hematic, ferric and pencil graphite set of aromas for early strength. Plenty of fruit emerges and continues onto the palate with an equal match by energetic acidity. The shiraz begins with a peppery jolt and the mourvedre delivers strength. Grenache the juice-giver is joined by fresh cinsault and finally finished with the cimmerian catalyst tannat. This has great presence and less funk than expected. Would love to see this age for a few years for tannin resolve and further integration. Will freak some folks out at the 10 year mark, perhaps even later. Drink: 2018-2024. Tasted December 2016.
