TASTING NOTE: Despite the adversity faced, from drought concerns and an earthquake, yields were better than expected and increasingly it is 2014 that is found to be the great third in a string of intensely dry vintages. Girard's is richer, gritty-grippy saltier and crushes with more hedonism because of that aridity and intensity of 2014. Tasted side by side this makes the '12 seem lean, smoky and sharp by comparison. As always it is the effects rendered by age (even just two years) that create just as mitigating a factor, especially when you consider the size of these tannins. This cabernet sauvignon is simply a huge wine that knocks you upside the head and leaves your shoes behind. Any decision to pop now before the end of this decade should be done so with aeration and some serious thought as to the marbled protein that will be served alongside. Drink 2019-2026.
