PINOT NOIR 2012 VQA Niagara Peninsula |
Vintage Assessments Tasting Note |
Producer |
THE FOREIGN AFFAIR |
Ambering light brick red colour. Intense, red-wine vinegar-driven nose with some spicy crancherry and sandalwood notes. Dry, medium to medium-light bodied, quite spicy, plummy, dried crancherry flavours with a lingering, very slightly cedary, dried apple-red-wine vinegar-tinged finish. Not my style. Made from 100% Pinot Noir with 20% of the grapes being dried in the appassimento method and then aged for 16 months on the lees in French oak. It has 14.1% alcohol and 7 g/L residual sugar. Here is another Ontario red with a beaver on the label, but this time much more expensive. A pass at the price. |

When living as expats in Italy in the early 1990s, Len and Marisa Crispino discovered the wines of Valpolicella and became fascinated with the appassimento process of drying grapes prior to pressing to create a richer, more concentrated wine. After acquiring prime farmland in the Niagara Peninsula in 2000, the Crispinos formed Foreign Affair and began to craft appassimento wines here in Ontario. Their 2012 Pinot uses 20% dried grapes and is aged for 16 months on the lees in French oak. Expect this to be a complex, elegant wine with red fruit flavours and notes of leather. |
