CHÂTEAU BELLEGRAVE DU POUJEAU 2008 AC Haut-Médoc
Vintage Assessments Tasting Note Producer
Extremely deep intense purple colour. Intense, complex, sandalwood-tinged, maturing, baked plum-fig-sandalwood nose with some faintly leafy, leathery notes. Dry, medium to medium-full bodied, well structured, fairly extracty, somewhat leathery, faintly earthy, slightly baked, maturing, ripe plum-cherry flavours with a lingering, fairly high acid finish. Slightly reminiscent of St-Julien’s Chateau Gruaud-Larose and, for me, a perfect rare rib steak red. An outstanding example of a very well-made 10-year-old traditional Cru Bourgeois still delivering lots of flavour at a very fair price. This small (4 ha.) Haut-Medoc property 15 km from Bordeaux produces a modest 1,600 cases. It is made from 50% Cabernet Sauvignon, 40% Merlot and 10% Cabernet Franc which spent 18 months in French oak (30% new). It has 12.5% alcohol and 2 g/L residual sugar with lot number L08-263110 on the back label. A total of 391 cases of 6 are available. Although I have never meet its Ontario agent Derek J. B. Kranenborg owner of All The Right Wines, I have just signed up for their newsletter. This is their second Vintages release and both have been recommended. CSPC 526921

TASTING NOTE: A small 10-acre vineyard close to the city of Bordeaux city has created a structured 2008, which is now beginning to mature. The black currant flavor is still dominant, but it has been joined by ripe, soft tannins and a delicious, refreshing layer of acidity, lifted by an herbal edge. Age for another year, but also drink now. Score - 90 (Roger Voss, Wine Enthusiast, Feb. 1, 2013) Price $ 38.95
