SPECK FAMILY RESERVE BACO NOIR 2014 VQA Ontario
Vintage Assessments Tasting Note Producer HENRY OF PELHAM
Not presented at the press and/or consultants preview in the LCBO lab. Here is my previous tasting note for this REPEAT. Very deep intense ruby-purple colour. Intense, slightly spicy, rich, ripe cherry-plum-cassis nose with concentrated sandalwood-cedar notes. Fairly dry, medium-full bodied, smooth, well structured, very spicy, intense, gently cedary, vibrant, red/black cherry, plummy-cassis flavours with a lingering, zesty, very faintly smoky finish. Try with bbq ribs or a tomato-based pasta. Aged for 18 months in American oak, it has 13.5% alcohol and 10 g/L residual sugar. A third repeat of the Recommended Best Buy 2014 (***) last released on February 18, 2017 at $24.95. CSPC 461699

TASTING NOTE: This new Speck Family Baco is the highest expression of the grape from the oldest vineyard blocks. It is an intriguing wine with a generous, almost piquant nose of blackcurrant fruit, rare roast beef, capers/herbs, coffee bean, pepper and grilled beets. It is quite full-bodied with firm, almost sour-edged baco acidity and very little tannin. Still, nicely structured. The length is excellent. It scores on complexity and depth. It may not be a style for all, but it is impressive. Reminds me of a more rustic southern French red. Best now to 2025. Tasted November 2016.
