CLAYSTONE TERRACE CHARDONNAY 2012 VQA Twenty Mile Bench, Niagara Peninsula |
Vintage Assessments Tasting Note |
Producer |
LE CLOS JORDANNE |
Bright very light yellow colour. Fairly spicy, ripe lemon meringue nose with lots of toasty notes. Dry, fairly intense, slightly spicy, complex, quite well structured, baked ripe lemon flavours with a lingering, fairly tangy, rather overly cedary, mineral-tinged finish. Has 13.5% alcohol and only 2 g/L residual sugar. Not up to the more restrained recommended 2011 (***) released on October 25, 2014 at $40.00. |

TASTING NOTE: Outgoing winemaker Sebastien Jacquey crafted a beautiful 2012 Claystone Terrace Chardonnay. He managed the warm season by picking at precisely the right moment, not too late, retaining crucial vibrant acids, and then adding back flesh and weight with long ageing on the lees (at least that's how I see it). This has a lovely, slightly nutty profile, terrific, lemony acids and a pleasantly yeasty-toasty finish. New barrels, it seems, were in the small minority. Outstanding length with real palate presence and genuine complexity. Score - 92 (John Szabo, MS, winealign.com, July 2, 2015) |
