Caol Ila is pronounced “cullEEla” and means Sound of Islay. The distillery is in a cove near Port Askaig that overlooks the Sound of Islay. This is a rare treat because, for such a cherished distillery, remarkably little of it is released as Single Malts, such as this. Most of the distillates are sold to other producers for their blends. Whisky expert Michael Jackson describes Caol Ila as “A wonderful aperitif”. (Malt Whisky Companion, 5th Edition, 2004) |
