THE SUN SKIN-FERMENTED VIDAL VQA |
Vintage Assessments Tasting Note |
Producer |
REIF |
Looks like flat Orange Crush. Somewhat spicy, faintly honeyed, tangerine citrus nose. Fairly dry, medium to medium-light bodied, smooth, spicy, ripe melon-apple-citrus purée flavours, with a lingering, fairly high-acid finish. Ready-to-drink. Has 12.5% alcohol with a screwcap closure. TONY ASPLER / 88.5-points - Gold colour with a coppery tint; waxy, apple nose with an earthy note; medium-bodied, dry, spicy, peach and citrus bouquet (a real disconnect between the nose and the flavour); slightly bitter, tannic finish. TASTING NOTE: Orange wines have been produced for centuries - but orange wine has nothing to do with oranges. It's a style that involves leaving the juice in contact with the grape skins and seeds to impart colour and tannin, a thing not typically done with white wines. This Vidal was fermented on the skins and allowed to age a further 30 days on the skins. The result is a wine with honeycomb, binned apple, peach, dill and cold black tea aromas and flavours. Chill and serve with barbecue fare, or sweet-sauced or spicy foods. (Vintages panel, April 2018) |
