SPECK FAMILY RESERVE CHARDONNAY 2016 VQA Short Hills Bench, Niagara Escarpment |
Vintage Assessments Tasting Note |
Producer |
HENRY OF PELHAM |
Forward medium light yellow colour. Attractive, intense, bright, lemon-key lime pie nose with some rich cedary notes. Dry, medium-full bodied, quite well structured, very spicy, mouthfilling, complex, ripe lemon meringue flavours with a fairly high acid finish. Ready-to-drink. Best with poultry and white meats - not seafood. This REPEAT has 13.5% alcohol and 2 g/L residual sugar and was fermented in French oak - 40% in new Allier barrels and the balance in 1-year-old oak. Being a very hot year, I suspect that this should be drunk in the near future. |

TASTING NOTE: Yellow-gold in the glass, the appearance suggests the oak exposure that is immediately apparent on the nose: It is smoky and lightly resinous, with hints of lemon and apple fruit underneath. A rich creamy texture is balanced by firm acidity, that brightens the palate and helps the fruit soar over the oaky undertones. This is made in an aggressively oaked, new world style, but I think it has the acidity and fruit to justify giving it a year or two in cellar for the oak to integrate. But those who like fairly up-front oak won't be able to resist the urge to drink it early. Score - 90 (Tim Appelt, winediscovery.ca, April 14, 2018) |
