MEGA SPILEO |
Extremely deep intense purple colour. Intense, slightly spicy, very ripe plum nose with some sandalwood-cedar notes. Dry, medium-full bodied, intense, well structured, dense, cedary, mouthfilling, baked plum flavours with a lingering, slightly earthy, tobacco finish. This blend of 60% Mavrodafne and 40% Mavro Kalavritino has 14% alcohol and 4 g/L residual sugar with lot number AX010262/11 on the back label. Riper than the 2010 (**/**+) with 88.5-points was released on February 4, 2017 at $29.95. |

TASTING NOTE: The 2011 Red is a 60/40 blend of Mavrodaphne and Mavro Kalavritino, aged for 16 months in oak (85% French, the rest American; 60% new, 30% used). It comes in at 13.5% alcohol. This is not quite as lush and as full as the 2010 in our vertical, but it is, perhaps, more aggressive early on. Of course, it is also a year younger. It is easy to see why the winery likes to release these late. The haze of tannins and acidity pretty much obscured everything else on opening, but about two hours later it did begin to show very well. When this rounds into form, it should be a graceful wine with an elegant demeanor. Right now, the fruit is pretty hard to find. Drink Date: 2017-2029. Score - 90 (Mark Squires, robertparker.com, Dec. 30, 2015) |
