ESTATE CHARDONNAY 2016 VQA Beamsville Bench, Niagara Escarpment |
Vintage Assessments Tasting Note |
Producer |
HIDDEN BENCH |
Bright medium straw colour. Intense, gently complex, very cedary, ripe lemon-apple puree nose with some resiny, mineral notes. Dry, medium bodied, slightly spicy, intense, ripe lemon-apple flavours with some mineral notes on the lingering, very cedary, fairly high acid finish. Has 13% alcohol and 2 g/L residual sugar. I just wish that there was a tad less oak. Tasted twice. Not up to the recommended 2015 (***) with 90-points released on November 25, 2017 at $29.95. TONY ASPLER / 90-points / TRY - Spicy, toasty-oaky nose with a floral note; medium-bodied, dry, elegant, apple flavour with zesty acidity, well-balanced with a perfumed finish. |

TASTING NOTE: The internationally acclaimed Hidden Bench is a high-water mark for artisanal, terroir-driven wines. The Estate Chardonnay is once again defined by its firm acidity, complex fruit and spice tones, supported by vanilla and herbal undertones. Distinct, clear-cut minerality, another hallmark of this perennial standout, provides a pleasing stony character. Taut and elegant with superb poise and length. (Vintages panel, Jan. 2018) |
