Vintage Assessments Tasting Note |
Producer |
Ardbeg Distillery Ltd. |
Last evaluated for the September 9, 2000 release. Rated: Smoky & Rich *** Light gold colour. Very intense, rather peaty, smoky, salty, dried lemon nose with some hints of herring. Solid, mouthfilling, intense, rather peaty, smoky, dried fig and prune flavours with great length. Quite delightful. The distillery ceased operations in 1983 and did not start up again until Glenmorangie purchased the property approximately 5 years ago. |

For me, this is unquestionably the greatest distillery on the face of the earth. My view has not changed since I was poured a dram of this incredible stuff in Port Ellen in the early 1980s. Countless thousands tastings of other whiskies worldwide have only confirmed my initial reaction. Ardbeg produces a malt which can be flawless. A glass of this, first warmed in the hand and then slowly taken around the mouth, just has to be the reason we were given tastebuds. (Jim Murray, Complete Book of Whisky, 1997) |
