Auchentoshan is considered one of the finest Lowland malts. Historically, Lowland malts were triple distilled (most other Scotches, double), so Auchentoshan resurrected the practice when they reopened in the mid 1980s. The process gives the finished product elegance and subtlety. Michael Jackson (Malt Whisky Companion, 2005) suggest their distillate is ‘[Jazz musician] Stan Getz rather than Sonny Rollins; Vivaldi, as opposed to Beethoven ... [Auchentoshan Three Wood] has at least ten years in bourbon wood, a good ear in Oloroso and six months in hefty Pedro Ximenez [sherry casks]. |
