IDISMA DRIOS XI 2020 Drama
Vintage Assessments Tasting Note Producer WINE ART ESTATE
Since 2020 more than 60 Xinomavro Greek reds have appeared in Vintages. Fortunately, I have reviewed almost all of them. This grape is capable of producing fine refined reds that have often been compared to Barolo’s Nebbiolo. This Wine Art Estate is the most expensive one yet. Only 10 barrels were produced in the region of Kali Vrisi (a small village 23 km northwest of Drama on the northern foothills of Menokia). It has a medium deep red colour with an appealing, fairly intense, complex, gently toasty, elegant, crancherry-tinged, black-cherry-cassis-plum nose with some faintly earthy, sun-dried tomato and wild stawberry notes. Dry, medium plus bodied, nicely textured, harmonious, very slightly spicy, black currant and strawberry-plum flavours are followed up by a lingering, still youthful, bright , minerally finish. It is fairly approachable now and has 14% alcohol, under 1 g/L residual sugar and a hefty 6.8 g/L total acidity. Aged for 12 months in French oak (50% new) with lot number L11524A2 on the back label. TASTING NOTE: Roasted herbs, tobacco, grilled figs and black fruit on the nose of this juicy red. It's medium- to fullbodied with nicely mellowing tannins and a tasty combination of sweet fruit and earthy flavors. Drink now or hold.
