| On November 6 I had the opportunity to blind taste this Oreno 2022 against Tignanello 2022. Both from Tuscany but vastly different grapes and prices: $99.95 vs $192.95 for Tig. Both have vastly inflated 99-point scores posted on the LCBO website. So how do they really compare? Well the Tig won hands down with 96-points vs 93-points for Oreno. As a long-time Oreno fan I have tasted/reviewed all but the 2015 in the past 24 Vintage releases. The 2022 is lighter and much less impressive than the richer 2021 at 95+ points. The 2022 dropped to 93-points and would not be my choice to lay-away. The alcohol was down from 15% to 14.5% and the grape composition has dramatically changed from 50% Merlot (now 45%), 40% Cabernet Sauvignon (same) and 10% Petit Verdot (now 5%) plus a new 10% Cabernet Franc. It has a medium-deep purple-ruby colour with an intense, gently cedary, bright, ripe, plum-cherry-cassis nose. Dry, medium-plus bodied, nicely textured, slightly spicy, fairly intense, bright, plum-cherry-cassis flavours with a lingering gently complex finish. The lot number L010224/1 appears on the back label. It is quite ready to drink! |

| TASTING NOTE: There's a purity and beauty to this that impresses you the minute you put your nose in the glass. So aromatic. Flowers, graphite, blackcurrants and hints of gunmetal. Medium- to full-bodied with tannins that coat your mouth but give a feeling of fine cashmere. The length and intensity is calm but rather endless. 45% merlot, 40% cabernet sauvignon,10% cabernet franc and 5% petit verdot. From organically grown grapes. Best after 2028. Score - 99 (jamessuckling.com, April 27, 2024) |
