BARRIQUE PLAVAC MALI 2017 Croatia

NEW in Vintages. This Croatian flagship barrel-aged 100% Plavic Mali has a enormous following back home. It is new for me but fellow wine writer had awarded 88-points to the previous vintage saying that it is mid-weight, open-knit, juicy and jammy with some candied berry/sour plum fruit. Some baked character here. Very starchy tannins coagulate the finish. The length is very good. I think that this 2019 is better having a fairly deep purple red colour and a slightly spicy, bright, ripe, plum nose with some sandalwood notes. It is dry medium-plus bodied and well balanced with some ripe berry flavours on the lingering, sandalwood finish. Still quite fresh and ready to drink without much oak evident. It has 14.5% alcohol and just under 5 g/L residual sugar with lot number L24181 on the capsule.

TASTING NOTE: Plavac Mali is a cross between Crljenak Kastelanski (ancestral Zinfandel) and Dobricic grapes. It's the primary red wine variety grown along the Dalmatian Coast of Croatia. This one was aged in barriques, bringing smoky notes to a core of ripe, spicy berry fruit.
