DOMAINE DU GRAND ORMEAU 2020 AOC Lalande de Pomerol, sustainable

This remarkable 2020 blend of 80% Merlot, 10% Cabernet Franc and 10% Cabernet Sauvignon spent two years in French oak. It has a very deep intense garnet red colour and a lovely, intense, complex, gently earthy nose focused on ripe black cherry, Damson plum and black currant. Dry, medium-full bodied, fleshy, intense, ripe, blackberry-tinged, Damson plum fruit balanced by some bright, cedary notes on the long lingering faintly savoury finish. Perfect with a rib steak, it has 14% alcohol and 2 g/L residual sugar.

TASTING NOTE: I am a fan of the merlots from Lalande-de-Pomerol as they always over-deliver for the price. This is a classic with ripe black fruit nestled amid fine oak cedary spice, fresh but subtle herbs. It is medium-full bodied, more dense than I expected with some warmth and firm tannin. Big but balanced and the length is excellent. Best 2025 to 2030. Tasted Sept 2023. Score - 92 (David Lawrason, winealign.com)
