GRAND RESERVE MERITAGE 2022 VQA Niagara Peninsula
Vintage Assessments Tasting Note Producer JACKSON-TRIGGS
This hefty Bordeaux-inspired red (aka Meritage) consists of a new blend of 44% Merlot, 41% Cabernet Franc and 15% Cabernet Sauvignon. It has a fairly deep intense purple colour and has an intense, slightly spicy, ripe, plummy-black-cherry nose with lots of toasty, cedary-vanilla notes. Dry, medium-full bodied, very bright, well structured, intense, youthful, ripe, plum-cherry-cassis flavours with some licorice-sandalwood notes on the lingering, rather cedary, still slightly grippy finish. Aged for 18 months in French and American oak (28% new) with full secondary malolactic fermentation, it has 13.8% alcohol, 2.4 g/L residual sugar and 5.4 g/L total acidity with lot number L240821 on the lower part of the glass bottle meaning that it was bottled on August 21, 2024. TASTING NOTE: This Bordeaux-inspired blend has become an Ontario classic. Look for a complex, plush, elegant wine, with layers of dark fruit, plum, cassis, oak spice and vanilla framed by smoke and wood. Always a savoury delight. Pair with beef or lamb stew or, as the winery suggests, pizza alla pala with prosciutto and cherry tomatoes. Price $ 29.95
