TONDONIA RESERVA 2014 DOCa Rioja
Vintage Assessments Tasting Note Producer R. LÓPEZ DE HEREDIA
This 15th Vintages release of TONDONIA RESERVA was tasted twice. It has a tight, amber-tinged, deep purple-garnet-red colour. The nose is intense, complex, slightly spicy and cedary with some very faintly earthy, sandalwood-tinged, maturing, ripe, Damson-plum-cassis notes. Dry, medium-full bodied, complex, intense and gently maturing with very attractive, ripe, Damson plum fruit along with a touch of cassis on the long, lingering, gently cedary, minerally, sandalwood-tinged finish. This very tasty and still youthful (albeit surpringly approachable) blend of 70% Tempranillo, 20% Garnacha,10% Mazuelo and 10% Graciano has 13% alcohol, under 2 g/L residual sugar and 6.6 g/L total acidity with lot number L-1427 on the back label. It was aged for six years in 225L American barrels which were made at the winery from imported Appalachian mountain oak and bottled without filtration. CSPC 356337

TASTING NOTE: Viña Tondonia is one of the few vineyards in Spain that makes a world-class red and white. Nicely mature as it moves into its second decade, this is a classic López de Heredia assemblage of Tempranillo, 20% Garnacha and 5% each of Graciano and Mazuelo. Complex, layered and focused, it has fine-boned tannins, racy acidity, notes of petrichor and red cherry and a nice interplay between sweetness and acidity. Drink date: 2027-2040.
