FABRE MONTMAYOU |
| This new 2024 release has a very deep dark purple colour and an attractive, slightly spicy, ripe, plum-black-cherry nose with some cedar notes. Dry, medium-plus bodied, bright, youthful, ripe, plum-black-cherry-cranberry flavours with a lingering, gently cedary, still slightly grippy finish. Best with bbq meats - it will definitely benefit with another year or so of bottle aging. Some 60% of the wine aged in used French oak for 12 months and it has 4.5% alcohol and under 3 g/L residual sugar with lot number L08526 on the back label meaning that this batch was recently bottled on March 26, 2026. This is the 19th Vintages release I have reviewed since March 21, 2012. |

| TASTING NOTE: For this Reserva Malbec, Fabre selects grapes from 40-year-old vines planted next to the Vistalba winery, in the alluvial and stony soil on the Mendoza river's northern bank. Following frequent pump-overs (three times a day) and a year of aging, with 60% of the volume in barrels (all used oak) and the remainder in concrete tanks, the wine offers a succulent and mature expression of the variety, enveloping the palate. Make no mistake, it is not an overwhelming wine; it has acidity and tannins with just enough energy - perhaps 'light' is the right word - to illuminate the dark, dense fruit. It offers tremendous value for money. Score - 94 (Patricio Tapia, guiadescorchados.cl, 2026) |
