SAN LORENZO GRAN SELEZIONE CHIANTI CLASSICO 2020 DOCG
Vintage Assessments Tasting Note Producer CASTELLO DI AMA
This 9th VINTAGES release has a bright deep purple red colour. The rich, complex, ripe nose shows outstanding intensity with ripe plums and Marasca cherry fruit along with some hints of roses and some faintly earthy-sandalwood-cassis notes. Dry, medium-full bodied, rather dense, ripe, plum-cherry-raspberry-cassis flavours linger on the palate and are followed up with bright, gentle toasty-sandalwood notes with some youthful tannins still present. It will benefit from another 3+ years to become more integrated. The grapes - approximately 80% Sangiovese, 10% Merlot and 10% Malvasia Nera - are vinifed separately with individual malolactic fermentation in barrel and are then assembled and aged for 12 months in oak barriques (20% new). It has 13.5% alcohol and under 1 g/L residual sugar with lot number L180423 on the back label. CSPC 12751

TASTING NOTE: The 2020 Chianti Classico Gran Selezione Castello di Ama San Lorenzo is fabulous. It offers up a compelling mix of blackberry, graphite, crushed rocks, spice, lavender and black pepper, showing striking inner sweetness, gorgeous mid-palate pliancy and [mind]-blowing balance, all in a medium-bodied style that will be approachable with minimal cellaring. San Lorenzo remains an archetype for contemporary Chianti Classico. Production is down about 30% in 2020 because of stringent selection. Drinking window: 2025-2040.
