LES ABEILLES CHARDONNAY 2023 France
Vintage Assessments Tasting Note Producer PIERRE GIRARDIN
This Vielles Selections Massales de Chardonnay 2023 is drawn from the limestone marl Jura soils called Abeilles. This unique clone of Chardonnay is whole-cluster pressed, fermented with native yeasts and aged in neutral barrels ouille (topped up) barrels. The end result is a unique, extremely complex, somewhat controversial tasting Chardonnay which sells for $103.95. Bright medium-plus straw in colour, the nose is extremely intense, minerally, leesy. nutty and somewhat oxidative with tangerine-peel and botanical notes. Dry, medium bodied, very intense, fairly well structured, extremely complex, rather acidic, citrus peel flavours with some hints of lime yogurt followed up by a lingering, leesy-minerally finish. It has 12.5% alcohol and 2 g/L residual sugar with lot number LVFCA23 on the back label. Very interesting to try, but not overly appealing for me at least at the moment especially at the price. An acquired taste. CSPC 47953

TASTING NOTE: From a respected producer based in Jura, this wine is sourced from vines planted in 1959. Made in what locals in Jura call the \"Burgundian style,\" this Chardonnay is more about fresh fruit and less about the oxidative character that defines many Jura wines. Expect ripe tree fruit and bright citrus in an impeccably balanced wine. Price $ 103.95
