NIAGARA ESTATE GOLD VIDAL ICEWINE 2023 VQA Niagara Peninsula

Bright medium yellow colour, it has an intense, youthful, very sweet, somewhat tropical, citrusy, Seville orange marmalade nose with some bright, honeyed, toasty, caramel-apricot notes. Very sweet but balanced, it is medium-plus bodied, very bright, rich and quite creamy with spicy, honeyed, apricot-Seville-orange-marmalade flavours followed up by a lingering, mouthfilling, tropical-tinged, crème brûlée finish. This 2023 Niagara Estate Gold Vidal has 9.5% alcohol, 236 g/L residual sugar and a hefty 10.1 g/L total acidity. I suggest serving not too cold in order to taste all the flavours. Fermented in new French oak at 15ºC for 16 days after which it received three months in barrel before bottling. Because of high total acidity, this Vidal icewine can evolve and improve significantly with extended temperature-controlled aging of up ten years or more. In terms of comparison however, the previous 2022 with higher residual sugar and total acidity offers greater aging potential.

TASTING NOTE: A classic expression from a pre-eminent, groundbreaking Niagara producer. As always, this is a richly textured, balanced wine, with ripe mango, orange peel, lychee, spice, clove, vanilla and honey. High-toned, fresh and evocative, it's a charming demonstration of how good Icewine can be.
