Vintage Assessments Tasting Note

This half-bottle has a fairly deep garnet red colour. The nose is intense, slightly spicy and quite cedary with some faintly earthy, sandalwood-tinged, Damson plum fruit. Very dry, medium-plus bodied, intense, dried, Damson plum flavours with a faintly bitter, gently cedary, minerally, sandalwood-tinged, grippy finish. This blend of 70% Tempranillo, 20% Garnacha and 10% Mazuelo and Graciano has 13% alcohol, under 2 g/L residual sugar and 6.6 g/L total acidity with lot number L-1284on the back label. It was aged for six years in 225L American barrels which were made at the winery from imported Appalachian mountain oak. Bottled without filtration, it seems somewhat closed at the moment

TASTING NOTE: The 2013 Reserva Viña Tondonia is a blend of 70% Tempranillo, 20% Garnacha and 10% Graciano and Mazuelo, grown in the calcareous soils of the Tondonia meander in Rioja Alta. Aged extensively in American oak, it offers restrained black fruit, wild herbs, balsamic hints and sweet spices with gentle cedar and vanilla notes. Mediumbodied with chalky grip and a layered, tertiary finish, this is a benchmark classic - refined, enduring and unmistakably Tondonia. Drinking window: 2025-2055. Score - 97 (Joaquín Hidalgo, vinous.com, May 22, 2025)
