CHARDONNAY 2023 California |
Vintage Assessments Tasting Note |
Producer |
SIMI |
This 2023 crowd-pleasing California blended Chard still maintains a touch of its ready-to-drink, tropical-toasty style of yesteryear. Happily, this 20th Vintages release (I have reviewed every one to date) is better than the previous 2022 with a touch less oak. It has a bright light straw colour with an intense, slightly spicy, very faintly tropical, ripe, lemon-apple meringue nose with some cedary notes. Dry, medium bodied and smooth, the spicy, tropical-tinged, ripe, lemon-melon-pear puree flavours are followed with a fairly crisp, lingering, gently cedary finish. Best with poultry and white meats, it has 13.5% alcohol and under 3 g/L residual sugar with number 24233 on the lower part of the glass bottle. Screwcap closure and no longer has a Sonoma Valley designation. |

TASTING NOTE: Simi was founded in 1876, and the cellars that were built in 1890 are still in use today. This Chardonnay shows apple, pear, melon, citrus, tropical fruit, sweet oak spice, toast, vanilla, baking spice and mineral. Crisp and pleasing, it's ideal for grilled seafood or mushroom skewers seasoned with tamari and balsamic vinegar. |
