Vintage Assessments Tasting Note |
Producer |
SOUTHBROOK |
Fairly intense deep purple red colour. Attractive, slightly spicy, ripe, plum-cherry purée nose with some cedary-sandalwood notes. Dry, medium bodied, slightly spicy, bright, gently juicy, harmonious, fresh, ripe, plummy-cherry flavours with a lingering, mineral-tinged, very gently cedary, crisp, well balanced finish. This attractive, ready-to-drink, crowd-pleaser has 12.6% alcohol and 3 g/L residual sugar with a screwcap closure. It was fermented in open top oak vats with wild yeast followed by 100% malolactic fermentation and then aged in French barrels for 12 months. |

TASTING NOTE: Ontario's 2019 vintage threw many a curveball at winemakers, including some wild fall weather, but created wines of exceptional freshness. Varieties that ripen in the early-to-mid-season, such as Pinot Noir, Gamay and Merlot, did particularly well. This Merlot offers plum, blackberry, chocolate, smoke and spice, with the crisp acidity of the vintage. Rich, supple and long, it will drink through 2027+. |
