VIÑA BOSCONIA RESERVA 2013 DOCa Rioja |
Vintage Assessments Tasting Note |
Producer |
R. LÓPEZ DE HEREDIA |
Founded in 1877, this family-run bodega is the oldest in Haro and was one of the first three in Rioja. This 2013 has a youthful deep intense purple red colour. The nose is intense, quite complex and still edgy with mineral-driven, Da14mson-plum-cassis-cherry fruit along with lots of cedary notes. Dry, medium-full to full bodied and well structured with intense, plum-red-cherry-cassis fruit flavours followed up by a minerally, lingering, rather cedary, bright, still youthful finish. Aged 5 years in American oak (225 litres), this has a hefty 6.5 g/L total acidity and is unfiltered. This blend of 80% Tempranillo, 15% Garnacha and 5% Graciano and Mazuelo has 13.5% alcohol and under 2 g/L residual sugar with lot number L-1198 on the back label. It still needs time. |

TASTING NOTE: It's quite an achievement to produce a red wine as good as this in the rain-affected 2013 vintage. Tempranillo based with support from 20% Garnacha, Graciano and Mazuelo, this hails from a 58-year-old vineyard called \"El Bosque\" on clay and limestone soils in Haro and is the most Pinot Noir like of the López de Heredia reds, all raspberry, red cherry and summer pudding flavours and a balanced, textured finish. Drink date: 2024-2032. Score - 95 (timatkin.com, Rioja Special Report 2024) |
