VIÑA TONDONIA RESERVA 2012 DOCa Rioja
Vintage Assessments Tasting Note Producer R. LÓPEZ DE HEREDIA
Tasted at the LCBO tasting bar on the day of release. Well this was a big surprise as I had bought and blind tasted both the half and full bottle on the October 5 release and found the to be quite different in colour and taste. By far the magnum was best, especially as it had been opened the day before allowing it to develop. Unlike the regular bottle, this one has a amore robust deep purple-red colour. The nose is intense, complex, slightly spicy and cedary with some faintly earthy, rustic, sandalwood-tinged, ripe, Damson plum fruit. Dry, medium-full bodied, complex, intense, ripe, Damson plum fruit along with a touch of cassis on the long, lingering, gently cedary, minerally, harmonious, sandalwood-tinged finish. This blend of 70% Tempranillo, 20% Garnacha and 10% Mazuelo and Graciano has 13% alcohol, under 2 g/L residual sugar and 6.6 g/L total acidity. It was aged for six years in 225L American barrels which were made at the winery from imported Appalachian mountain oak and bottled without filtration. Perhaps a tad more forward and not quite as extracty as previous vintages. CSPC 97014

TASTING NOTE: The 2012 Viña Tondonia Reserva comes from a very dry year, with 25% less rain than the average (at the time), resulting in lower yields of very healthy grapes that delivered wines with nice balance between alcohol and polyphenols, making it very apt for the aging in barrel. It had a slightly longer élevage in barrel, six years. The wine is aromatic with a developed profile, spicy and tertiary (forest floor, a touch of brick dust and iodine), complex and nuanced. The palate is full and round, with polished tannins and a long, dry finish. It has a textbook Tondonia nose and profile. Drink date: 2025-2035.
