GROWERS BLEND CABERNET FRANC 2020 VQA Niagara Peninsula |
Vintage Assessments Tasting Note |
Producer |
TAWSE |
Deep purple-red colour, the nose shows lots of crancherry fruit with some spicy, mineral-tinged, sandalwood notes. Dry, medium bodied, nicely structured, gently cedary, fairly intense, bright, plum-crancherry-raspberry flavours with a lingering, high acid, faintly savoury, still youthful finish. It has 13% alcohol, 2 g/L residual sugar and a hefty 6.15 g/L total acidity. Aged for 16 months in French oak barrels, this 2020 Cabernet Franc is slightly savoury and still a tad tight - it should benefit with another year or so of aging. A REPEAT of the recommended 2020 (***) was released on July 22, 2023 at $29.95. |

TASTING NOTE: A generous, ripe year for Niagara growers, this 2020 cabernet franc puts the vintage, and talented winemaking, on full display in a style that's somewhere between the Loire and Bordeaux. Absent are the variety's leafyherbal pyrazines, traded in for riper red and black fruit, while wood is a minor contribution to the overall profile. Length and depth are very good, and in the final summary, this is a sharp value in one of Ontario's strongest varietal categories. Drink now-2028 or so. Tasted July 2023. Score - 91 (John Szabo, MS, winealign.com) |
