MARSANNE 2020 VQA Beamsville Bench, Niagara Escarpment |

KEW VINEYARDS |
This classy Rhone-inspired blend of 95.2% Marsanne, 2.4% Viognier and now 2.4% Pinot Gris has a bright medium straw colour and an attractive nose that's slightly spicy, faintly toasty and quite complex with ripe, citrusy-tinged, lemon-apple meringue fruit. Dry, medium bodied, harmonious and surprisingly well structured with ripe, lemon-apple-citrusy flavours followed up by a lingering, minerally finish. Versatile and ready-to-drink - great with oysters, seafood and poultry. It has 14% alcohol, 3.4 g/L residual sugar and 5.8 g/L total acidity with lot number 2021-09-30 on the lower part of the glass bottle. Ten months of lees aging in previously-used French 500 litre oak explains the excellent silky mouthfeel. Only 1,022 cases made, it includes vines originally introduced by Kew’s award-winning winemaker Philip Dowell who made this 2020. Screwcap closure. |

TASTING NOTE: From the Niagara Escarpment wine region, Kew Vineyards 2020 Marsanne is excellent value at $20. Rich, rounded and mouth filling, this dry, full-bodied white wine is made from a traditional Rhône white wine grape, but is quite happy on the Beamsville Bench with its seventh vintage at Kew. A splash of Viognier is added to the wine to give it a bit more perfume. The wine was also aged for eight months in large 500-litre French oak barrels giving it roundness and a creamy texture. Rich on the nose and palate with ripe stone fruit, soft citrus zest, ginger, sweet baking and toasty oak spice flavours, the wine is ready to enjoy now through to 2025. Pour with pan-fried trout or a roast duck a l'orange. Drink date: [Now]-2025. Score - 91 (nataliemaclean.com, May 25, 2024) |
