MARSANNE 2019 VQA Beamsville Bench, Niagara Escarpment
Vintage Assessments Tasting Note Producer KEW VINEYARDS
This new blend of 93% Marsanne and 7% Viognier has a bright medium straw colour and an attractive nose that is slightly spicy, gently toasty and quite complex with ripe, citrusy, lemon-apple meringue fruit. Dry, medium bodied, harmonious and well structured, the elegant, bright, ripe, lemon-apple-citrusy flavours are followed up by a lingering, bright, minerally finish. Versatile and ready-to-drink - great with oysters, seafood and/or poultry. This bargain-priced Rhone-inspired blend has 14.3% alcohol, 3 g/L residual sugar and 5.7 g/L total acidity with lot number 200924. It spent 8 months in 100% French oak with lees aging which explains the excellent mouthfeel. Screwcap closure. Only 800 cases produced. CSPC 485334

TASTING NOTE: This is the seventh vintage of marsanne from Kew Vineyards on the Beamsville Bench in Ontario, one of the few producers of this Rhône grape in Ontario. A small addition (7 per cent) of viognier was added to enhance the fragrance and flavour, while eight months aging in French oak puncheons (larger 500-litre barrels) contributes to the creamy texture. This is a dry white wine with a rich and ripe character that's marked by toasty and spicy notes that add to the citrus and apricot flavours. Drink now to 2025.
